This year marks 120 years since our congregation was founded and 100 years since our sanctuary was built! To mark this dual milestone, we're celebrating with 2 weeks of worship, fellowship, and service as we honor our church's diverse history and look forward to its future. Read on for more details about special events.

3 Sundays of Worship
Centennial Kickoff - "Tent" Revival
October 23 @ 11:00 a.m. We'll kick off with a tent revival-style worship service in honor of the revival that led to the formation of our predecessor congregation, Salem Methodist Episcopal Church, South. There will be lots of singing, prayer, witness & testimony, and an adaptation of an altar call, a practice common at tent revivals. Pastor Sarah will preach and the Green Street choir will lead singing and music. Centennial: Week Two - Sanctuary October 30 @ 11:00 a.m. At the midpoint of our celebrations, we will hold a worship service focusing on the theme of Sanctuary. Rev. Carter Ellis, former Green Street intern and current Methodist pastor, will return from Kansas City, KS to preach for us, and Jay Siskind will be back leading songs along with Ron Hunter and our usual cast of musicians. We'll introduce our new marriage policy and to rededicate the sanctuary to revolutionary love. |
2 Wednesdays of Fellowship
The Welcome (Back) Table
October 26 @ 5:30-7 p.m. On Wednesday, October 26, we gather for The Welcome Table for the second time since before COVID. You can read more about our efforts at bringing back and reimagining this community meal here. On the 26th, we'll have chili and baked potatoes, as well as intentional conversation on how to shape this gathering as we move forward into Green Street's future. Green Street Story Share November 2 @ 7:00 p.m. Everyone has a story about Green Street Church, and we want you to share them! Join us for a special Story Share event where anyone can take 2-3 minutes to tell a story from Green Street or to share what this community has meant to them. Pastor Sarah is also gathering videos from folks who can't come in person but would like to share, so email sarah@greenstreetumc.org if you would like to submit a video. Especially on the week of All Saints, it will be a beautiful time to remember the people that have made this place special over the years. |
2 Saturdays of Service
October 29 & November 5
@ 10:00 a.m. - noon We'll meet at the church and then disperse in small groups to service sites around the neighborhood. Sites may include the neighborhood and park, with our partners at the church, the Hawley House, Granville Place Apartments, and individual homes in West Salem. All ages are welcome and encouraged to participate, and no specific skill set is required! |
All Saints Centennial Celebration
November 6 @ 11:00 a.m.
Our final worship service in this series will be an All Saints Centennial Celebration with Rev. Kelly Carpenter preaching and many past staff and interns leading worship. We will honor the saints of Green Street who have gone before us and look ahead to the next 120 years of ministry through an All Saints liturgy and the celebration of holy communion. We'll have special music from Diana Tuffin, Kenny Barner, Ron Hunter, Judith Saxton, the Green Street Choir, and more, and after the service we'll take a family photo on the church steps and then all will be invited to a reception in the Fellowship Hall.
